Good first attempt. My first was farther into my little balls, but you got the idea. I see the issue with bleeding. You pulled out while you were banded. Also, straighten the pins out better and they will penetrate your dartos layer easier. Another thing to try is what I did at first with finer needles. Gently grind one side of the point, then the other side. If you look close you will see it forms a tiny knife edge to cut through the layers instead of puncturing like a conical tip does. Last, support them instead of trying to skewer as they hang, even with a knife-like edge or a hypodermic needle they need to be kept in place.
